Chinese tie-break day
September 6, 2008

Both Chinese players won their tie-break contest against a Russian and an Italian opponent. Hou Yifan showed the determination she lacked yesterday and won both rapid games. In the second rapid game she used a line against Sedina`s French defense that was applied by Aljechin and later by others (immediately chasing the Black Bishop from b4 by a3) and then castled long after a few more moves. In the press conference she told that the long castling was not a home preparation just was made by instinct. Anyhow, it served her well.

Shen Yang had some luck in avoiding the utilization of a better position by Kosintseva in the second rapid game and then won in the Blitz game contest. Thus, she is performing better and has gone further in the World Championship than last time.

As predicted by us, the map of the nations has changed from the previous arrangement in Round three. Now, the one player - one nation rule applies, except China which is represented by two players.

Tomorrow, special attention will be devoted to the game between Stefanova and Cramling but we can expect long and tough battles in the games which involve the young, upcoming players, too.
