More draws than victories
September 1, 2008

For the 2nd round, the players turned to be more cautious and thus we got more draws than victories. Eight games finished with draw and only six players could win. Kosteniuk and Koneru are qualified for the next round as their opponents did not show up.

The Chinese domestic rivalry finished with Shen Yang` victory, while Hou Yifan won against the Mongolian surprise-maker, Mongontuul. For a good part of the struggle, the party was balanced but in the complicated middle-game Hou Yifan strengthened her pressure and before the time-control pushed her pawn to the last row and it cost a Queen to her opponent. Tatiana Kosintseva showed her good preparation for the tournament and won the game, while her sister made a draw.

Paehtz probably used a lot of energy in the tie-break and could not repeat her performance from the previous day. Stefanova was coping with her Chinese opponent for 52 moves and the game ended in draw. Matveeva scored the most significant victory over Xu Yuhua in a game of 58 moves. The two young talents, Muzychuk and Harika could not decide their game and settled for a draw in 30 moves.
