Only Hou Yifan with perfect scores
September 4, 2008

The young Chinese prodigy Hou Yifan won all the games she played so far in the Women`s World Chess Championship. While her games are not faultless, she managed to overplay the opponents mainly in the middle part of the games as well as in the end games. The performance shown by her is very convincing although the ratings of her opponents were lower than hers at least by 120 ELO points.

Another young star, Anna Ushenina from Ukraine managed to win against her Russian opponent after Matveeva made a serious mistake, fell into time trouble and could not repeat her performance from the previous round.

Equal number of draws and victories characterized the day. The longest battle was in the Russian domestic rivalry between Kosteniuk, A. and Kosintseva, T. playing the Spanish Breyer variation with some individual touches already in the opening. In the middle game, Kosteniuk pushed a strong King-side attack, giving three pawns for a Knight. In the endgame, thus she had three pawns against a Knight with one Rook on both sides. The game ended in draw. Stefanova and Cramling won their games.
