The Beauty-mountaineer and the flying horse are the symbols of the World Championship
Julys 29, 2008

Not any important sport competition can do without special symbolism. World Women's Chess Championship 2008 which is to take place in Nalchik from August 28 to September 18 is not an exception. The author of the emblem, mascot, and the medal of the Championship, Deputy Chairman of the KBR Union of Artists, black-and-white artist Zaur Bgazhnokov explained what these elements mean:

"Naturally the central figure of the emblem is a girl in a national dress. The image of the girl emphasizes that the competition takes place in the Caucasian republic. The girl's open palms symbolize hospitality, cordiality and openness. The crown on her head shows the high status of the tournament that presupposes coronation of the winner of the Championship. FIDE emblem is placed above the crown. The top of the composition is two-headed Elbrus which specifies once again the status and the place of the Championship. The composition is framed by the horseshoe - the symbol of Nalchik - embraced by flags of Russia and Kabardino-Balkaria.

The mascot of the Championship is the flying horse with a laurel branch and a crown which symbolizes victory, agility and grace. The idea was to unite a chess piece and a totem animal of mountaineers - a horse - in one image. Flaunting flags of Russia and KBR with chess pieces between them are depicted a bit lower.

The obverse of the medal features the emblem of the Championship. The reverse bears elements of the mascot - the flying horse with a laurel branch and a crown. The horse is hovering over the symbolic map with Nalchik and Elbrus marked on it"

These are identifying signs to help participants and spectators familiarize. The emblem, mascot, and the medal of the Championship were approved at the last meeting of the Organizing Committee of the Championship presided by KBR President Arsen Kanokov. Now T-shirts, base-ball caps, bags, souvenir pens and notebooks are being prepared. The emblem and the mascot will be printed on invitation cards and badges. The symbols of the Championship will also be used in the decoration of the stage of the Zeleny Theatre where the opening ceremony will take place. Zero-order bulletin of the Championship has been issued recently. President of KBR Kanokov, President of the Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, President of the Russian Chess Federation and Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation Alexander Zhukov, Minister of Sport, Tourism and Youth Politics of the Russian Federation Vitaly Mutko addressed to the participants and guests of the Championship from the pages of the bulletin. It contains the information about the members of the Organizing Committee, principals, and first round pairings, the list of participants, round schedule both in English and in Russian. There are also photos of all eleven World champions of the passed years, information about the history of FIDE, reference information about the republic and its capital. A magazine illustrated with pictures of Nalchik and picturesque places of Kabardino-Balkaria will be sent to 64 chess-players from 32 countries (China, USA, India, Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Sweden, France, Georgia, Armenia) in the nearest future.
