Hou Yifan scored first victory
August 29, 2008

The young Chinese player, Hou Yifan scored the first victory in the Women`s World Chess Championship in Nalchik. In an old-style Ruy Lopez, her opponent Mona Khaled from Egypt made some mistakes quite early and resigned at move 25th. In the press conference, Hou Yifan told that she started to feel the better position after the 15-16th moves and tried to play very precisely not to miss the winning chance.

As several players have not showed up at the board, their opponents won also the games. There have been some real strong fights among the players on several boards and a few games ended in draw. Among the surprise losses/victories, we have to mention that Mongontuul (Mongolia) won against Rajlich (Poland) and former world champion Zhukova (Ukraine) lost her game against Rohonyan (USA). From the battle of the two young stars, Harika (India) came out victorius against Nebolsina (Russia).

Initial moves on the board No.1 were made by the two presidents, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and Arcen Kanokov, traditionally. They scrolled along the boards and paid attention to each of the games and the players during the beginning period of the round. Thereafter, they answered many questions from the journalists in the press center (see video and text).
