Knock out system for Chess Queens
Julys 19, 2008

World Women's Chess Championship, a sixty-four-player tournament, which is to start in Nalchik on August 28, will be held on the knock out (Olympic) system eliminating participants within six rounds. There will be five rounds of matches, comprising two games per round, with the winners progressing to the next round. The 6th round (final round) shall be played over four games and the winner will be declared Women's World Champion.

If the scores are level after the regular games, after a drawing of colours, two tie break games shall be played. The games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes on the clock for each player with 10-second increment per move. If these matches are also drawn the, after a new drawing of colours two 5- minute games with 10 - second increment per move will be played. If the score is still level, the players shall play one decisive sudden death game. The player, who wins the drawing of lots, may choose the colour. White shall receive 6 minutes, Black shall receive 5 minutes, without any addition. The winner qualifies for the next round. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces qualifies for the next round. The final match, or round 6, shall be played over four (4) games. The time control shall be 90 minutes for the first 40 moves followed by 30 minutes for the rest of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move from move one. If the scores are level then, after a new drawing of colours 4 tie-break games shall be played using the electronic clock starting with 25 minutes on the clock for each player with an addition of 10 seconds after each move. If the scores are level after tie-break games then, after a new drawing of colours, 2 five-minute games shall be played with the addition of 10 seconds after each move. If the score is still level, the players shall play one decisive sudden death game. The player, who wins the drawing of lots, may choose the colour. White shall receive 6 minutes, Black shall receive 5 minutes, without any addition. In case of a draw the player with the black pieces will be declared Women's World Champion.

So these are the rules, difficult at the first sight. But experience shows that not more than 20 % of games reach tie-break stage, and not more than 5 matches reach additional games. Championships are held biannually. 2006 year Champion Xu Yuhua from China kindles special interest. The holder of the highest rating is Humpy Koneru from India (2622). Antoaneta Stefanova from Bulgaria, the Champion of 2004 also has a very high rating of 2550. A repeated champion Maia Chiburdanidze from Georgia will surely contribute to the success of the Championship. Being a member of the Georgian youth team she visited Nalchik in 1972 when she played against the Russian team.

Of 64 participants 28 have the title of Woman International Master and 8 of them - the title of Grandmaster (men). There are eight Chinese players, seven Russians, six Georgians. Four players will come from India, there will be three American and three Ukrainian players. Other 32 countries will send one player each.
